FAQ

All about John Lennon

What kind of cap did John Lennon wear?

His famous leather cap (designed by Helen Anderson) could be described as a Bakerboy style or Newsboy style cap, though I have also seen it called Maciejowka, which is a Breton or Greek fisherman style cap. However, I would say it is entirely unique to him and I should know!

He customised his favourite cap with a Ferrari hat pin  - when he passed his driving test he bought a Ferrari! You can read all about this in my story.

What did John Lennon wear?

He was certainly very stylish. According to GQ magazine "the most stylish musician of all time".

He loved to dress all in black as much as he loved a totally white outfit! If you want to look like him try a black t-shirt with a white denim jacket. But of course top it off with his fabulous leather bakerboy cap!

You can even get a bit of Lennon style with your t-shirt - check out my t-shirt shop with limited edition prints of my own designs and other friends of John.

Did John Lennon go to art school?

Yes he certainly did and that's where I met him!

I met John Lennon in 1957, on my first day at Liverpool College of Art. He ran into me in the corridor, asking "Hey, are you that bird who painted Lonnie Donegan?" I was. We became firm friends.

Read all about it in my backstory.

Hats in fashion

Are hats fashionable for men?

Of course we have to say, yes! They totally are!

There are so many hat styles to choose from depending on the look you want to achieve. Whether it's a baseball cap, traditional felt Fedora or the classic bakerboy or newsboy style cap that John Lennon made so famous, everyone can find a style to suit them.

In fact some major celebrities have begun wearing hats more and more over the past few years. Big names like Brad Pitt, Ryan Gosling, David Beckham, Matthew McConaughey and Idris Elba have all been seen in various types of cap or hat.

How do you wear a bakerboy cap?

John lennon wore his towards the back of his head and often with a wool coat and chunky scarf as you can see from my photo archive.

Bakerboy caps look great with chunky jackets - wool or leather - or knitted sweaters. You can wear them like John did or pull it low down over your eyes. They suit all face shapes, all ages and genders.

Gift vouchers are perfect for ultra Lennon fans when you want to surprise them with a collector's item gift because it's vital to measure the head of the wearer before ordering. So, unless you already know their head size (unlikely!) we suggest a gift voucher so they can measure and order in their own time.

How to measure your head for my leather cap

A message from Helen about sizing:
Hats are a bit like jackets and dresses: sizes are supposed to be universal but may vary from one manufacturer to another. I can’t guarantee you a perfect fit, but I can do my best to help.

My cap is available in 4 sizes: Small (S), Medium (M), Large (L) and Extra Large (XL). It’s an investment piece, so I encourage you also to invest three minutes to find the perfect fit.

Don’t just guess your size!
John Lennon’s head measured 23.5 inches. He was a size XL (big brain!). Here's how I measured it, back in 1964 - and how you can measure yours now.
  1. Don’t panic if you don’t have a tailor’s tape measure handy. You can also use a length of string or ribbon, and then measure it against a ruler.
  2. Place the string or tape around your head about 3mm above your ear, across the mid-forehead, completely circling your head. Hold the tape firmly, but not super-tightly.
  3. I’d like you to measure your head exactly where the cap will sit. If your measurement falls between sizes, choose the next size up.
Remember: If you have big hair, you’ll probably need the next size up!

If you are in such a hurry to get hold of a cap that you don’t have time to measure your head, you could also check the size of another hat that fits: hat sizes are universal… in theory. Don’t see your size? Have a special request?
